How to Get Your Website Cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews: A Practical GEO Guide

How to Get Your Website Cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews: A Practical GEO Guide — illustrated CodeUpp guide

Platform guidance checked 16 October 2026. Discoverability recommendations do not guarantee rankings or AI citations.

Quick answer: make your page useful, verifiable and eligible to be found

You cannot purchase a technical setting that guarantees a citation in ChatGPT, Gemini or Google AI Overviews. You can make useful pages accessible to the relevant systems, answer specific questions clearly and publish evidence worth referring to. The strongest starting point is a page that helps a real buyer make a decision and shows where its facts come from.

Generative engine optimisation, usually shortened to GEO, is the practice of improving that discoverability and usefulness for AI-assisted answers. Answer engine optimisation, or AEO, overlaps with it by emphasising direct, understandable answers. Neither term describes a universal ranking formula. Different products retrieve and present information differently, and the same question can produce different sources at different times.

For a small business, the sensible sequence is to fix access problems, improve a few commercially important pages, add original evidence and measure what happens. Do not begin by producing hundreds of nearly identical articles. A smaller body of accurate material is easier to maintain, easier for customers to trust and easier for your team to stand behind when an answer quotes it out of context.

Separate the products before changing crawler settings

ChatGPT search, Gemini Apps and Google's generative Search features are not one distribution channel. A rule affecting one may not control the others. Write down which outcome you want: discovery in search answers, ordinary search indexing, permission for model training or access when a user specifically asks a tool to open a page. These decisions have different implications for publishers.

ChatGPT search and model training are separate controls

OpenAI identifies OAI-SearchBot as its search crawler and GPTBot as a crawler associated with model training. Their settings are independent. Its documentation recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot and the published IP ranges for search discovery. ChatGPT-User serves user-initiated requests and is not the same as automatic search indexing. Allowing access supports eligibility; it does not promise a citation. OpenAI crawler documentation.

Before editing robots.txt, review the existing file and the firewall together. A permissive crawler rule is ineffective if the hosting security layer presents a challenge page or blocks the request. Conversely, do not remove site-wide security protections merely because an unfamiliar user agent claims to be a legitimate bot. Ask the developer to verify requests using the provider's current documentation and retain appropriate protection for private areas.

Google Search has its own eligibility and controls

Google's current guidance says a page must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet to appear in its generative Search features. The site must also be included in those features through the relevant Search Console control. There is no special AI schema requirement. These conditions establish eligibility, not selection for every answer. Google's generative AI optimisation guide.

In June 2026, Google announced a Search Console toggle for participation in generative Search features and new appearance insights. Its announcement says opting out removes traffic and impressions from those features, while that choice is not a ranking signal for other search results. Review the controls and reporting available in the actual property rather than following an older tutorial that assumes those options do not exist. Google's publisher controls announcement.

Gemini Apps should be checked separately

Google-Extended is a product token governing certain uses for Gemini model training and grounding in Gemini Apps and specified Vertex AI services. Google says this token does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search. It is not a separate HTTP crawler user agent. A publisher should review this choice separately from Googlebot and Search Console participation settings. Google's crawler and product-token reference.

Gemini's source interface can show related public websites and, where relevant, user-provided or connected material. A related link is not automatically proof that every nearby statement came from that page. When auditing visibility, record the actual answer and the relationship between its claim and your page. Gemini help on related sources.

Build pages around decisions your customers actually make

A useful article has a defined reader, a decision and a boundary. For example, a retailer comparing hosted ecommerce with a custom build needs to understand catalogue complexity, ownership, integrations and ongoing costs. A page that merely repeats that both choices are powerful gives little reason for a person or an answer system to use it as a source.

Start with sales conversations, support questions and the gaps in existing product documentation. Ask what a buyer misunderstands before speaking to the team, which assumptions cause projects to exceed budget and which decisions cannot be reversed cheaply. Those questions often produce more valuable material than a list of broad phrases selected only because competitors use them in headings.

Give the answer before the background

Open with a concise answer that includes the main condition. For a cost question, say what the estimate includes and what changes it. For a comparison, identify the situations in which each option fits. Then explain the reasoning. This makes the page useful to a hurried reader without turning the rest of the article into repetitive summaries of the same point.

Consider the difference between saying that a custom store is flexible and explaining that it may be appropriate when negotiated B2B pricing, warehouse integrations and approval workflows cannot be handled cleanly by the existing platform. The second answer connects a technical choice to an operational constraint. Our Shopify, WooCommerce and Laravel comparison uses that kind of decision structure.

Keep claims understandable outside their paragraph

A numerical claim should carry its unit, period and scope. A price needs a currency and a statement about tax or included work. A regulation needs a jurisdiction and an applicability boundary. If a sentence would become misleading when copied into an answer without its preceding paragraph, rewrite it so the essential qualification stays close to the claim.

This is especially important for international content. A guide can be useful to readers in Saudi Arabia, the UK and India without pretending that they share identical commercial conditions. Explain where a local gateway, language requirement, tax treatment or procurement practice changes the decision. Do not attach a country name to otherwise identical paragraphs and call that local expertise.

Publish evidence that adds something to the conversation

Original evidence does not have to mean an expensive research programme. A well-documented implementation example, a transparent cost model or a carefully explained comparison can be useful. The requirement is honesty about what the evidence represents. An illustrative budget is not a market survey, and an internal test on one site is not a universal performance benchmark.

Use a claim register before drafting

Create a small editorial sheet with the proposed claim, supporting source, date checked, geographic scope and limitations. Mark claims that are based on your own calculations separately from those reported by another organisation. If a fact cannot be verified, remove it or present the uncertainty clearly. This simple process prevents an attractive but unsupported statistic from being copied into several articles.

For example, a development budget could show assumed hours multiplied by an assumed hourly rate, with separate lines for integrations and testing. The reader can then adjust the inputs. That is more defensible than claiming a precise national average without a disclosed sample. The custom ERP cost guide illustrates how scope can be discussed without disguising a planning model as observed market data.

Cite the source that can support the exact statement

Prefer the regulator for a legal rule, the platform for its current product policy and the original researcher for a study. Link near the statement so readers can verify it without searching through a long bibliography. A reputable organisation's homepage is not enough if the relevant detail appears only in a specific document. Check that the page still says what the article claims.

Keep source-based summaries proportionate and add your own analysis. A useful article explains how the fact affects a decision, which assumptions remain unresolved and what the reader should verify next. Rephrasing an entire external report does not create an original business guide. For legal and financial topics, qualified review may be necessary before a company relies on the advice operationally.

Make methods and limitations visible

If you publish a benchmark, state the sample, measurement period, exclusions and denominator. Explain whether it covers orders, sessions, users or completed deliveries. If the dataset does not support a country-level conclusion, say so. A page that acknowledges a genuine evidence gap can be more useful than one that fills the gap with a confident number.

Our country conversion benchmark guide takes this approach to a common marketing question. The aim is to help a retailer make a defensible comparison, not to manufacture a table that looks authoritative. The same discipline applies to software performance, payment acceptance, returns and any other statistic likely to be repeated in an AI answer.

Make the important information easy to access

A content review should be paired with a technical inspection of representative pages. Confirm that a public page returns the expected content, has a stable address and is reachable through ordinary navigation. Check that the title, main heading and opening answer describe the same subject. A page can be beautifully written yet difficult to discover if its only link is hidden inside an interaction that visitors rarely use.

Review rendered content and the underlying response

Ask the developer to inspect both what the browser displays and what the server returns. Ensure the article is not accidentally replaced by a login prompt, an empty application shell or an error page for important visitors. When JavaScript is involved, verify the actual result rather than assuming all consumers execute the same code in the same way.

This is a reliability recommendation, not a claim that every crawler behaves identically. The implementation should suit the product and its documented requirements. A small content site may benefit from straightforward prerendered pages; a complex application may need a different approach. The website redesign and SEO guide explains why route stability and content preservation deserve attention during larger changes.

Use structured data to describe visible facts

Maintain accurate article titles, authors, dates, images and breadcrumbs. If a page includes structured FAQ data, its questions and answers should match what readers can see. Do not add fabricated reviews, credentials or ratings in an attempt to appear more authoritative. Structured data should make the page's meaning clearer, not introduce a second version of the business that exists only for machines.

Google's current AI optimisation guidance does not prescribe special AI markup. Treat any vendor promising a proprietary schema shortcut cautiously and ask for evidence of the claimed mechanism. Likewise, a machine-readable content file can be a publishing convenience without being a demonstrated ranking factor. Do not confuse an available format with a platform requirement. Google's official AI guidance.

Keep the page usable after the click

A citation has little commercial value if the landing page is unreadable on a phone or hides its answer behind intrusive overlays. Test typography, contrast, table scrolling and keyboard navigation. Keep contact details and relevant next steps easy to find without interrupting the article. The Core Web Vitals guide covers the performance side of that experience.

The page should also give visitors a reason to continue. Contextual internal links can connect a broad comparison to a detailed cost model or implementation checklist. Use descriptive labels and link where the next question naturally arises. A paragraph containing ten unrelated service links is harder to read and does little to explain the relationship between the topics.

Geographic relevance comes from substance, not a country list

For a business serving several regions, distinguish global principles from local operating details. A software selection framework may be broadly transferable; payment availability, language support and data transfer obligations may not be. Build local sections only when you can explain a meaningful difference and support it. Avoid implying offices, customers or legal expertise in a country without evidence.

For Gulf readers, an Arabic interface or regional payment flow may be central to the buying decision. For European readers, accessibility and privacy obligations may change the brief. For Canadian, Australian or South African readers, a supplier's support hours and contracting arrangements may matter more than the location of its sales language. These are topics to investigate with the customer, not assumptions about every business in those markets.

A translated page should receive editorial review in the target language. Preserve the meaning of prices, exclusions, technical terms and legal qualifications. Do not simply translate an English keyword repeatedly. The Arabic website guide discusses the relationship between content and interface design. Readers notice when a page mentions their market but cannot explain how the advice applies to them.

Measure citations without inventing a universal AI ranking

Create a small, stable set of representative questions based on real buying decisions. Record the product, mode, language, date and prompt used for each observation. Note whether browsing or search was active and whether the answer actually linked to your page. A brand mention without a source link is a different outcome from a citation to a specific guide.

Separate visibility, visits and business value

Visibility is whether the site appears in a recorded answer. Visits are the sessions you can attribute to a referring source. Business value is the qualified enquiry, sale or other outcome associated with those visits. Each layer has measurement gaps. Some people read an answer without clicking; others return later through another channel. Do not add these categories together as if they measure the same thing.

Use a practical spreadsheet before buying a large monitoring platform. Include the question, cited URL, surrounding claim, competing sources and any factual error. Review whether the citation accurately represents the page. If an answer consistently misreads an exclusion or price, improve the clarity of the source material where appropriate. Do not rewrite sound information merely to imitate an incorrect generated answer.

Treat small samples as observations

Suppose a team tests twenty defined prompts in one product and its pages appear in four responses. The observed result is four of those twenty runs under those conditions. It is not evidence that the brand owns twenty percent of all relevant AI answers worldwide. Repeated observations can help identify patterns, but changing prompts, models and locations makes comparison more complicated.

Keep the testing schedule and question set consistent enough to interpret changes. When you add new questions, distinguish them from the original series. Pair the observations with site analytics and genuine sales feedback. Ask prospects how they found the business through an optional, respectful question rather than trying to infer every influence from technical referral data.

A practical first-month programme

Week one: access and editorial inventory

Choose five pages tied to important buyer decisions. Check public access, indexing status, crawler preferences, current Search Console controls and obvious rendering failures. List unsupported claims, stale prices and unclear ownership. Assign someone to each issue. The goal is a manageable set of repairs, not a promise to transform visibility across every AI product in seven days.

Week two: improve two pages deeply

Rewrite the opening answer, strengthen the comparison and attach sources to changing facts. Add one useful original element, such as a scope worksheet, a transparent calculation or a documented implementation checklist. Review the page with someone who understands the buyer's problem. If that person cannot explain what decision the article helps make, the draft is not ready.

Week three: connect and verify

Add relevant internal links, check metadata and structured data, and test mobile reading. Verify that publication and update dates reflect actual editorial events. Have a second person check calculations and source interpretation. Publish through the normal release process, retaining a record of what changed so future measurement does not become detached from the work performed.

Week four: establish the reporting rhythm

Run the agreed question set, review available search insights and inspect attributed visits and enquiries. Record findings without declaring success or failure from a tiny sample. Decide which pages need a factual update, which need stronger evidence and which already serve readers well. Continue improving the material with the clearest business purpose rather than expanding the article count for its own sake.

Frequently asked questions

Can a business guarantee citations in ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews?

No. Access, clear content and credible evidence can support discoverability, but they do not guarantee selection in a particular answer. Evaluate a supplier on the work it can demonstrate: technical checks, accurate research, useful content and transparent reporting. A guaranteed citation package should be treated as an unsupported commercial promise.

Do I need to allow model training to appear in ChatGPT search?

OpenAI documents independent settings for OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot. A publisher can permit the search crawler while making a separate choice about the training crawler. Review the current official documentation and firewall configuration before changing settings. Search access still does not guarantee that a page will be cited.

Is Gemini visibility the same as Google Search visibility?

No. Review Gemini Apps, Google Search and their relevant controls separately. Google-Extended governs specified Gemini training and grounding uses, while Google Search has its own crawling and generative-feature participation controls. Measure the actual product and response you care about instead of treating every Google AI experience as one channel.

Should every article include a long FAQ section?

Only include questions that readers genuinely need answered. A short, specific FAQ can resolve practical uncertainties, but repeating the article under question headings adds little value. If FAQ structured data is used, keep it consistent with the visible answers. Neither a large FAQ nor its markup guarantees a citation or rich result.

How long does GEO take to work?

There is no reliable universal timetable. Access repairs, editorial changes, crawling, indexing and product behaviour operate on different schedules. Agree on a review period and measurable work rather than a promised citation date. Track repeated observations and business outcomes, while keeping small samples and attribution gaps visible in the report.

What a good GEO investment buys

The durable output is a clearer and more credible website: pages that answer real questions, calculations a reader can inspect and technical foundations that support discovery. AI citations may become one route through which that work reaches customers. Build the editorial programme so it remains worthwhile even when a particular product changes its interface, sources or reporting.
